Gas Networks Ireland builds on its green success
Gas Networks Ireland is hoping to maintain its crown as the Green Large Organisation of the Year at the upcoming 2021 Green Awards, after another hugely successful year for its sustainability programme.
Winner of both the Green Large Organisation and Sustainable Energy Achievement awards at the 2020 event after exceeding the public sector energy reduction target by 11%, achieving a 99% recycling rate across its offices and reducing its overall footprint by 27% in 10 years, Gas Networks Ireland was named as a finalist to defend both titles in 2021, as well as competing for two new accolades as the Green Energy Provider and the Green Public Sector Organisation of the Year.
Led by Sustainability Manager, Anne Moore, the national network operator has been strong on taking strategic and coordinated action on climate issues.
Among its biggest achievements in the last 12 months was attaining a ‘B-‘ in the Carbon Disclosure Platform (CDP) global emissions ratings, exceeding European, global and sector averages to finish in the top quartile of all businesses assessed globally.
“We are delighted that the work of our team across Gas Networks Ireland to drive a more sustainable business continues to be recognised,” Ms Moore said. “As guardians of Ireland’s gas infrastructure, we aim to deliver our services in a sustainable manner that contributes to the protection of the environment while supporting the social and economic development of the communities we operate in, as well as the wider economy
“These accolades and awards are an important validation for how we continually improve as a business, how we serve our customers, and the dedication within the organisation to our sustainability journey.
“We look forward to sharing more of our journey and successes across all three sustainability streams – social, economic and environmental – when we publish our third annual sustainability report later this year.”
In a big year for the national utility, Gas Networks Ireland also exceeded its 2020 social sustainability goals and won a CCA global award for its outstanding community support during the pandemic.
The 2021 Green Awards will take place online on Thursday 17 June, hosted by author, comedian and broadcaster Colm O’Regan.
