Gas Networks Ireland provides project update on €20m ‘Gas to Listowel’ Project

Gas Networks Ireland is today (Thursday, 22nd February) hosting a drop in information event at the Listowel Arms Hotel, to provide a project update on the €20m ‘Gas to Listowel’ project.  Once complete, the delivery of this project will facilitate both domestic and commercial connections to the Natural Gas network, for customers adjacent to the route and within Listowel town.
Work began on this project during 2017, with the laying of Natural Gas Feeder Main pipeline from Barrigone, Co Limerick to Listowel town, via Ballyhahill, Co Limerick and Moyvane, Co Kerry, with local Natural Gas distribution networks being constructed in each of these locations.
To date, 39 of the planned 41kms of gas pipeline between Barrigone in County Limerick and Kerry Ingredients in Listowel has been completed.  Cleaning and connecting sections of pipeline and pressure testing is now underway, in preparation for commissioning the pipeline, which is planned for March 2018.
The construction of the local gas distribution network in Listowel town, Ballyhahill and Moyvane, which will service local homes and businesses, is scheduled to begin in mid-March, making gas available to customers in these areas later in 2018.
While the next stage of works in the town will be smaller in scale, some disruption is unavoidable in the short term. Once again, Gas Networks Ireland wishes to thank the residents and business owners of Listowel for their patience and understanding as we complete this important project.
Denis O’Sullivan, Head of Commercial, Gas Networks Ireland, said:
“We are delighted to be progressing with this next phase of the Gas to Listowel project.  We look forward to working with the local community, to deliver this important infrastructure project, and to seeing homes and businesses across Listowel fuelled by the cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy source that is natural gas."
Fran McFadden, Commercial Connections Manager, Gas Networks Ireland, said:
“We are delighted to be extending the natural gas network and progressing into Listowel town.  Initial feedback from residents and businesses in the town is showing that there will be a strong demand for Natural Gas.  Businesses making the switch can look forward to fuel cost savings of anywhere between 30% and 60% on their current fuel bills, together with reduced carbon emissions, no storage requirement and a constant, reliable supply of natural gas.”
Parties interested in getting more information on connecting to the natural gas network should contact Gas Networks Ireland on 1850 200 694 or visit
The €20m Gas to Listowel project represents a significant investment for the Natural Gas grid operator and the engagement of Kerry Ingredients as the ‘anchor load’ in Listowel ensures it is commercially feasible for gas to be delivered to the town.
