Gas Networks Ireland achieve third consecutive ‘Business Working Responsibly’ Mark
Gas Networks Ireland achieved the Business Working Responsibly (BWR) mark this morning. Presented by Business in the Community Ireland CEO Tomás Sercovich in the Mansion House Dublin, this is the third consecutive period that Gas Networks Ireland will hold the Mark.
The Business Working Responsibly mark is a quality benchmark for companies to measure Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Practices against peers in various sectors in Ireland. Gas Networks Ireland joins a select group of just 11 companies achieving certification this year, including four new recipients.
The Business Working Responsibly mark is Ireland’s only independently audited certification for corporate responsible and sustainable business practices. The Mark, whose auditing process is conducted independently by the National Standards Authority of Ireland and based on the ISO 26000 international standard, allows businesses to gain a baseline audit of their responsible practices.
Gas Networks Ireland improved its score across the five key corporate responsibility pillars of Community, Environment, Workplace, Marketplace and Governance. The most notable areas of improvement were in sustainable transport and travel, organisational change management, employee communications, and flexible working.
Commenting on the achievement Denis O’Sullivan, Managing Director of Gas Networks Ireland, says; “The Mark is an important validation that Gas Networks Ireland is a leader in corporate responsibility and sustainable business practices. We’re committed to giving back to the communities we serve and doing our part to protect the environment we work in.
It’s very important now, more than ever, that sustainability is at the core of our business. It gives us a competitive advantage, helping us retain our skilled workforce whilst also attracting new employees who want to work for a values-driven employer”.
Among the initiatives that Gas Networks Ireland supported this year were;
- Energize, supporting STEM in schools
- Time to Read, providing reading support to primary school students
- Skills at Work, giving secondary school students an insight into the world of work
- Co-operation Ireland, developing young people’s leadership skills
- Biodiversity initiatives, including pollinator workshops
- Staff volunteering, litter picking with Leave No Trace
A critical element of the Gas Networks Ireland approach is employee involvement. Staff members are actively involved in a number of the initiatives which the organisation supports.
