Driving a cleaner energy future with renewable gas
Virginia International Logistics, based in Maghera, Co. Cavan, is a family-owned business with over 40 years of experience in transport and logistics.
Committed to sustainability, Virginia International Logistic have invested in 25 renewable bioCNG trucks and constructed a state-of-the-art bioCNG dispenser at their headquarters. This partnership with Gas Networks Ireland is helping them reduce emissions and lead the way in decarbonising Ireland’s commercial transport sector.
Decarbonising Irish Transport
Ireland’s commercial transport fleet makes up just three per cent of vehicles on the road nationwide yet is responsible for approximately 20 per cent of transport’s carbon emissions.
BioCNG is key to driving sustainable supply chains and is a significant step towards net zero commercial transport in Ireland. It can cut a heavy goods vehicle’s (HGV) carbon emissions by up to 90 per cent, reduces lifetime vehicle costs compared to diesel and helps Irish hauliers to reduce their scope 3 emissions.

Committed to sustainability
Virginia International Logistics has displayed their commitment to sustainability by opening their bioCNG refuelling dispenser in Maghera, Co. Cavan, to other hauliers and Irish businesses eager to transition from diesel to bioCNG. This facility, developed in partnership with Gas Networks Ireland, provides a vital piece of renewable energy infrastructure to businesses in the North East region and beyond to decarbonise their transport operations. By providing access to a renewable, carbon-neutral fuel that can reduce emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel, this refuelling station supports Ireland’s net-zero ambitions and fosters a cleaner, greener future for commercial transport.

Ireland's cleaner refuelling network
In addition to Virginia International Logistics, Gas Networks Ireland has partnered with some of the most prominent forecourt operators and haulage companies throughout Ireland to make the alternative fuel option of low carbon gas a reality for Irish transport.
Gas Networks Ireland is committed to enabling sustainable energy services and are working towards transporting renewable gases at scale. With stations strategically located in Cavan, Dublin, Kildare, Limerick, and Tipperary, this demonstrates our commitment to enable new cleaner transport corridors for Irish freight operators and their customers

100% Renewable Gas Network
Gas Network Ireland’s ambition, as outlined in Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network, is to transform the gas grid to exclusively transport renewable gases by 2045. This includes transitioning from natural gas to a network that transports biomethane and green hydrogen. Collaborating with Virginia International Logistics to develop a public gas refuelling station in the North-East not only supports this vision but also demonstrates our commitment to a decarbonised energy future for Ireland. A net zero carbon network will play a critical role in achieving the Government’s climate targets and ensuring our country successfully transitions to a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network reflects the Government’s imperative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, by ensuring the gas network transports only renewable gases, biomethane and hydrogen while ensuring Ireland has a renewable, secure, and reliable energy supply in an increasingly integrated energy system.
