E,C and I Design Engineer

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.

The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role:

The Asset Delivery function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for the end-to-end planning, designing and delivery of GNI’s portfolio of asset development programmes. Encompassing Project Delivery Management and Design Delivery; the Asset Delivery function brings together all the technical and project support capabilities needed to take high-level projects and programmes from the Portfolio Office and translate these through from detailed design and project planning to construction delivery and handover to Asset Operations.

Reporting to the Senior Design Engineer EC&I, the Design Engineer will have responsibility for the detailed design of CAPEX and OPEX projects, across the gas Transmission and Distribution network. The Design Engineer will manage all aspects of the design and review

design risks associated with outsourced engineering service providers, ensuring a high-quality design service is delivered to the Business. The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively diagnose technical issues and have knowledge of gas related process design. The Design Engineer will work closely with Mechanical Design Engineers, outsourced EC&I partners and Technical Assurance function ensuring alignment of the Design Delivery process from end to end to meet overall project or programme timelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design EC&I projects, ability to complete associated design calculations in relation to gas standards, safety integrity assessments to deliver design aspects of CAPEX, OPEX and new connections for existing and future gas network to meet design programme timelines.
  • Act as Lead Designer for CAPEX, OPEX or new connections to the network where the design is performed internally within GNI. Where the design is outsourced, provide comment on the design review process and review residual design risks for sign off.
  • Support the design process to drive an outsourced hybrid design model to flex design capacity to meet CAPEX, OPEX and new connection programme timelines.
  • Support the continuous improvement of the design process tailoring material enquiry process to implement hybrid design process.
  • Develop process and procedures for materials guidance document for Engineering Service Providers, contribute towards driving efficiencies within the design process.
  • Ensure all design documentation is fully and accurately completed, develop appropriate procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory controls, where required.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of internal operational processes and procedures including ISO: 9000 in the Design environment.
  • Co-ordination of specialist technical services and third-party resources as part of the design process to complete control and instrumentation designs.
  • Support Senior Design Engineers as required and Lead Designers of other disciplines within the Design Delivery process.
  • Contributing to the ongoing competency initiative within Design Delivery.
  • Ensure a robust process is in place in terms of design documentation for each programme or project from a design delivery perspective.
  • Performing other duties as assigned from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Electrical / Instrumentation Degree in Engineering (Level 8) or recognised Level 8 engineering equivalent with a minimum of three years engineering experience, preferably in the natural gas industry.
  • Technical proficiency in Instrumentation, Control System design, Cathodic Protection Systems and equipment specification.
  • Competent in Hazardous Area classification and ATEX certification.
  • Have a strong working knowledge of Telemetry / SCADA systems.
  • Competent in fiscal metering systems.
  • Enthusiastic self-starter with a proactive approach to problem solving and process development.
  • Excellent interpersonal and strong leadership skills and the ability to influence, advocate and persuade.
  • Have a working knowledge of H&S standards and risk management systems e.g. Design Risk Assessment, HAZOP, etc…
  • Have a working knowledge of relevant Gas Standards, Codes of Practice and Statutory Requirements.
  • Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job.
  • Driver of high standards for individual, team and organizational accomplishment and delivering desired results.
  • Proven track record with dealing with complex issues, proactively and in a timely fashion, along with the ability to communicate complex information to others.
  • Ability to set own high standards of performance and delivering desired results.
