Interconnector Operations Engineer

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation. Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role

The Asset Operations function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for the construction, operations and maintenance of the Transmission and Distribution networks, executing all field work safely and efficiently in line with all relevant legislation, standards, industry codes and practices.

The Interconnector Operations team within Asset Operations is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the SWSOS, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Sub-Sea and Midleton transmission pipelines, compressor stations and Networks. Reporting to the Interconnector Operations Manager, the Field Operations Engineer is responsible for the delivery of planned, projects reactive and emergent operational activities on the transmission networks safely and efficiently.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engaging with Asset Program Managers as required representing the Operations team in the development and prioritization of asset programs across the BGN Network.
  • Responsible for the implementation of the GATE process for managing projects, verifying projects Gate 3 readiness and completing Gate 4 papers for IAC post project.
  • Coordinating the relationship between the CAPEX Programs team and Asset operations, assisting with design stage risk assessments, HAZCON’s, HAZOP’s.
  • Interfacing with the Asset Integrity team on behalf of the Operations team highlighting and escalating issues/concerns as appropriate.
  • Key interface with the Scheduling and Dispatch teams in relation to planned, reactive and emergent operations activities to ensure field operations are providing a safe, effective and efficient service.
  • Responsible for driving the interface between the Operations Performance team and the Operations team.
  • Coordinating operational activities in line with BGN Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
  • Providing flexibility to work across regions as required to address operational needs.
  • Driving performance in a team of Coordinators, Specialists, Support Staff and Technicians drawn from both BGN and Contractor resources.
  • Participate in engineering fora i.e. Materials Review Forum, Civil Forum and in the continuous development and review of technical standards, policies and procedures
  • Maintaining relationships across Service Delivery, Workflow Management, Asset Management, Regulation and Commercial and Heath Safety and Environmental.
  • Responsible for the Operations teams interface with designers, contractors and consultants
  • Supporting Emergency Management within Asset Operations as required.
  • Generation of reports as required.
  • Liaising with local authorities and other third parties as required.
  • Leading the cross-skilling of operational resources between the transmission and distribution networks.
  • Escalation point for field operations issues within the team.
  • Raise risks and issues as appropriate
  • Participate in the on call rota as required.
  • Performing other duties as assigned from time to time.
  • Travelling to attend site in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man when required

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven technical competence is essential– Engineering degree or other relevant qualification desirable
  • Minimum of three years relevant experience working with natural gas
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and the ability to influence, advocate and persuade
  • Knowledge of relevant Gas Standards, Codes of Practice and Statutory Requirements
  • Proven ability to create and develop good working relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals, coupled with the ability to gain commitment from others
  • Experience with identifying improvement opportunities, generating ideas and implementing solutions
  • Have excellent analytical skills and be able to identify and analyse problems and potential improvements, and propose and implement solutions
  • Ability to set up ongoing procedures to collect and review information as needed
  • Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job
  • Ability to set own high standards of performance and delivering desired results
  • You will require a full driving licence for the role
