Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,758km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in Europe 

 Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. 

 The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. 

 Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

Gas Networks Ireland is now seeking to appoint a Senior TX Inspector

The Role:

The Health, Safety, Quality, (HSQ) function within GNI is responsible for safety policy, quality assurance and compliance across all areas of the business. 

 

Reporting to the Quality Assurance Manager, the Senior TX Inspector is responsible for the overall management, development, execution, and performance of the annual risk-based audit and inspection programme across multiple asset types, including Transmission (TX), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Biomethane, and emerging assets and networks. 

This is a strategically focused leadership role that integrates deep technical expertise with forward planning and delivery of risk-based audit and inspection programmes, ensuring alignment with both operational priorities and long-term strategic objectives. 

Supports cross-functional collaboration, promotes continuous improvement, and contributes to maintaining alignment with organisational standards, industry practices, and regulatory frameworks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and execution of the annual risk-based audit and inspection programme across Transmission (TX), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Biomethane, and emerging assets and networks, ensuring alignment with operational priorities, strategic objectives, and regulatory requirements. 

  • Manage external resource partners, as required, to deliver the annual risk-based audit and inspection programme. 

  • Conduct detailed audits and inspections across construction, maintenance, and commissioning activities, ensuring coverage across all relevant asset types. 

  • Identify and analyse findings, trends, and recurring issues to identify immediate risks and long-term improvement opportunities, ensuring appropriate escalation and informing future risk-based planning across all relevant asset types. 

  • Create and follow through on corrective actions using the CAR (Corrective Action Request), SR (Service Request), and HAZCON processes to ensure implementation of preventive measures and effective resolution. 

  • Support and drive alignment of inspection programmes across the organisation, enhancing capability and consistency by embedding QA oversight, strategic planning, and long-term improvement through collaboration, expertise, and shared standards.

  • Manage NSWC contracting partners to plan and deliver their annual risk-based audit and inspection programme effectively, ensuring consistent coverage and quality across the network. 

  • Engage with key internal stakeholders and contracting partners to review and align with operational and strategic needs, ensuring they reflect current risks, standards, and regulatory changes. 

  • Ensure compliance with relevant procedures, specifications, regulatory requirements, and applicable standards, including ISO 9001 and ISO 45001. 

  • Complete comprehensive reports with clear findings, photographic evidence, and traceable actions. 

  • Lead the presentation of inspection outcomes and improvement initiatives at quality assurance forums including management, steering and safety committees. 

  • Collaborate closely with internal HSQ teams to ensure shared learning and consistent approaches. 

  • Champion digital innovation in audit and inspection processes, leveraging technology to enhance efficiency, traceability, and data quality, ensuring inspection forms are fit-for-purpose. 

  • Perform other duties as required from time to time.

     

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant third level qualification or equivalent experience

  • Demonstrated experience supporting audits and inspections, with working knowledge of quality assurance and safety principles in line with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 standards.

  • Minimum of five years relevant experience in natural gas or similar high-risk industry, with exposure to construction, commissioning, maintenance activities across disciplines such as EC&I and Mechanical. 

  • Demonstrates strategic thinking and leadership qualities, with experience fostering alignment, ownership, and continuous improvement. 

  • Ability to manage external resources and third-party contractors to support consistent delivery, compliance, and quality across all audits and inspections programmes. 

  • Familiarity with technology and innovation in audit and inspection processes, including digital tools, applications, reporting systems, and asset management platforms (e.g. Maximo, handheld devices). 

  • Excellent communication, reporting, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across all levels. 

  • Ability to analyse inspection data and trends, escalate risks appropriately, and contribute to long-term planning and improvement initiatives.
