Biomethane producers

Gas Networks Ireland has a significant part to play in supporting Ireland's transition to a net zero energy system.

Connecting to the gas network

One of our key roles is to facilitate the connection of new and existing anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities to the gas network. Contact us today to find out more.

The connection process

Direct connections of existing and new AD facilities located on or close to the gas network can be facilitated through a renewable gas entry point. Where a pipeline is not viable, the second option is to transport the biomethane by truck to a central grid injection facility, where it will then be injected into the gas network.

Reverse grid compression

Gas Networks Ireland has introduced an interim Reverse Grid Compression (RGC) process to support more biomethane injection into the gas network while long term policy is being finalised.

The process, now live, enables eligible projects to apply for reverse compression where it prevents costly reinforcement and reduces curtailment. This interim approach will help accelerate biomethane connections, support progress toward Ireland’s 5.7 TWh target for 2030, and strengthen the development of a sustainable indigenous biomethane industry.

Design and planning

We are committed to supporting delivery of the Government’s 2030 biomethane production target of 5.7 TWh and welcome connection enquiries from biomethane developers who are considering building anaerobic digestion (AD) plants.

For more detail of what is technically required when designing and planning for the connection of an AD plant from the developers’ side, please refer to our developers technical connection information booklet.
