Our stakeholders

We engage with our stakeholders because we understand the importance of listening to and learning from those impacted by our work.

Our stakeholder engagement strategy

Our engagement helps us shape a resilient and inclusive energy network that reflects the needs of our customers, communities, and partners. As we transition to a net zero carbon future, we are committed to embedding stakeholder insights into our planning and operations to ensure we deliver value for all.

Our stakeholder engagement approach

Our stakeholder engagement approach is based on AA100SES.

We use a structured five-step approach to stakeholder engagement. This ensures we identify the right stakeholders, plan meaningful interactions, execute inclusive engagements, integrate feedback into our decisions, and continuously monitor and improve our efforts.

Internal input

  • Key Stakeholder Engagement Areas (KSEAs) informed by
    • Gas Networks Ireland strategy and Balanced Scorecard
  • For each KSEA
    • 1, 5 and 10 year objectives identified

External inputs

  • Stakeholder understanding sought
  • Surveys e.g. Shipper / Supplier surveys, one and one meetings, collaboration etc.

Initiatives

  • External accountability: desired outcomes, planned engagements, success metrics
  • Internal responsibility: clear ownership, quarterly targets / monitoring

The results of these processes is distilled into the Gas Networks Ireland Stakeholder Plan.

Stakeholder Engagement Plan

Measuring stakeholder engagement success

In 2025, through our published Stakeholder Engagement Plan, we measure success through defined outcomes aligned with our four strategic objectives. These include customer satisfaction scores, stakeholder feedback, participation rates in consultations, and the implementation of stakeholder-informed initiatives.

Strategic objectives for 2025

Our 4 strategic ambitions
Our 4 strategic ambitions

Resilient energy network

We aim to maintain a safe and reliable network while enabling the transition to renewable gases. Our focus areas include safety, new asset delivery, network evolution, and energy security.

Sustainable energy services

We are committed to delivering renewable gases at scale and supporting our customers through the energy transition. We strive to enhance customer experience and ensure accessibility for all.

Integrated energy system

We are preparing for a future where gas and electricity systems work together seamlessly. Through collaboration, we aim to deliver efficient, decarbonised energy solutions.

Excellence in operations

We pursue innovation and sustainability in everything we do. From research partnerships to biodiversity initiatives, we are building a future-ready network that supports communities and the environment.

Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network

The strategic importance of stakeholder engagement in achieving the Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network.

Our journey to a fully decarbonised gas network by 2045 depends on meaningful collaboration. We know that innovation alone is not enough. We must work hand in hand with stakeholders to ensure our plans are practical, inclusive, and aligned with national climate goals. Through engagement, we build trust, gather critical insights, and ensure our strategy reflects the shared ambition for a cleaner, more secure energy future.

Our stakeholders

We engage with a wide and diverse range of stakeholders, as illustrated in our Stakeholder Wheel. This includes customers, government departments, regulators, local authorities, emergency services, suppliers, academic institutions, community groups, and EU policy makers. We update our stakeholder mapping annually to ensure we reflect emerging priorities and maintain inclusive engagement practices.

Public consultations and feedback opportunities

Upcoming consultations

In 2025, we will hold consultations on the Core Flexibility Report, Hydrogen Programme, Tariff Development, Gas Quality, and support for vulnerable customers.

How stakeholder input influences decisions

We use stakeholder feedback to shape our strategies, improve services, and ensure our plans reflect the needs of those we serve. Every consultation is an opportunity to co-create the future of our energy system.

Core Flexibility Report

The purpose of this webinar is to:

  • Introduce the Core Flexibility Report
  • Present the process of adaptive planning and Gas Networks Ireland's approach for the development of the first iteration and longer term road map
  • Invite feedback and address questions from stakeholders on questionnaires circulated to date.
