A cleaner energy for transport
Compressed natural gas (CNG) is the future of fleet transport
CNG is a clean, affordable, proven alternative fuel to diesel or petrol.
Why Compressed Natural Gas?
Proven, safe, reliable technology
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is natural gas that is compressed to fit in the fuel tank of a Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV). CNG is a proven, reliable technology with over 25 million vehicles operating worldwide.
The refuelling times of NGVs are as fast as diesel and petrol with similar travel ranges. As CNG stations are connected directly to the natural gas grid, it is always on and always available. The natural gas network is the ideal network to support the future of transport.
Cleaner compared to other fuels
- 22% less CO2
- 70% less nitrogen oxide
- 99% less particulate matter
- 80% less sulphur dioxide
The most environmentally friendly fossil fuel available is natural gas. It releases considerably lower emissions of greenhouse gases compared to diesel and petrol. This reduces the impact of the transport sector on global warming, where renewable gas is used in CNG vehicles, emissions are CO2 neutral.
Improved air quality
Up to 9 people die in Ireland every year because of excess emissions from diesel (Norwegian Meteorological). Natural gas emits significantly less harmful substances compared to other fuel types. This improves air quality, which has a positive impact on health and longevity.
Better for the Irish economy
We can use natural gas produced in Ireland for NGVs, rather than relying on imported fuel. Gas Networks Ireland transmits the gas from the Corrib field in Mayo into the Irish gas network, on behalf of Irish gas suppliers. Renewable gas will also be a source of indigenous supply. The indigenous production of gas for our fuel needs leads to job creation.
A gateway to renewable gas for transport
Gas Networks Ireland is supporting the development of renewable gas in Ireland. By 2030, 20% of the gas on the network will be renewable. As CNG stations are supplied from the current gas network, this allows for the introduction of renewable gas to NGVs. There will be no change required to the vehicle.
