What we do
Gas Networks Ireland owns, operates, builds and maintains the natural gas network in Ireland.
What work are we doing at GNI?
Delivering a safe, secure and efficient supply for customers
We ensure that almost 688,000 natural gas customers receive a safe, efficient and secure supply of natural gas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Transporting natural gas through our network
We transport natural gas through our 14,172km pipeline network. We have pipelines in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. We do not own the gas; we transport it on behalf of suppliers and shippers.
Connecting new customers to the network
Through the New Connections Programme, Gas Networks Ireland continually brings the benefits of natural gas to new towns in line with the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) Policy. We connect all customers to the network, regardless of their supplier.
Promoting natural gas as the fuel of choice
Natural gas is a clean, efficient and cost effective fuel. We actively promote natural gas as a fuel of choice for homes, businesses and industry. We are keen to see greater utilisation of the natural gas network and look for opportunities to expand the network where viable.
Power fibre network
Our subsidiary, Aurora Telecom, operates a power fibre network across the country as well as a Dublin Metropolitan Area network. Aurora Telecom has completed its fibre network from Dublin, via Galway and Ennis, to Cork. Gas Networks Ireland facilitates access, on a temporary basis, to dark fibre adjacent to the Mayo-Galway pipeline between Coolturk (Co. Mayo) and Ballymoneen (Co. Galway).
