1970s
In the 1970s natural gas was discovered off the coast of Kinsale, in the south-west of Ireland. This discovery was the leading factor in the making of Gas Networks Ireland.

The gas pipeline between Cork and Dublin was completed, followed by expansion to other cities across Ireland.

Sale of natural gas appliances increased by 50% and gas sales to the industrial/commercial sector increased by 15%.

Sub-sea interconnector 2 pipeline completed, to meet higher gas demands and declining supplies from Kinsale gas field.
