Gas to Ballycoolin

Project Overview

Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for building, managing and maintaining an extensive network of gas infrastructure across the Republic of Ireland, including the provision of new connections.

Gas Networks Ireland was contracted to connect a new industrial customer to the national gas network at Northwest Business Park in Dublin 15. Referred to as the Gas to Ballycoolin project, this work involved laying 540m of high-pressure pipeline as well as installing an Above Ground Installation (AGI) at the customer site.

Gas to Ballycoolin commenced in October 2025 and was completed ahead of schedule in May 2026.  The site is now fully operational with gas now flowing safely to the customer.

Tetra Tech Europe were the lead designer on this project, while construction works were undertaken by Murphy, and supervised by Gas Networks Ireland.

Project highlights

Gas to Ballycoolin involved the installation of a 540m transmission (high pressure) pipeline and the construction of an Above Ground Installation.

There were some unique engineering and project management aspects to this work:

  • Constrained working area - completing works within a spatially constrained and busy business park requiring 24/7 access for tenants. This involved detailed access planning and tailored working hours, including weekend and night works, to minimise impact and keep to schedule.

  • Pipeline construction - while a relatively short pipeline length, the route was in a heavily built-up area which included other services such as electricity, water and fibre cables.

  • Hot-tap - the new pipeline was live connected to the existing high-pressure Abbotstown to Ballough pipeline without any down time to other customers. The hot tap was completed within a privately owned property which required extensive negotiation and planning in order to minimise impact to the operation of their business.

  • AGI works - included pressure reduction, boiler house, gas analysis and associated electrical and instrumentation installation.

Environment and planning

Planning permission for the Above Ground Installation (AGI) was granted by Fingal County Council on 14th May 2024. The pipeline project was granted a Section 39A Consent from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) on 11th December 2025.  The pipeline Consent documents including all environmental reports are available to view at: https://www.cru.ie

The construction phase was undertaken in accordance with the conditions of these consents, including a detailed Construction Environmental Management Plan.
