Project overview
In 2018, we initiated a capital works programme for all multiple occupancy buildings across the country to ensure they are meeting the highest safety standards for gas.
This is a rolling programme of works involving survey, design, refurbishment, review and maintenance.
There are approximately 10,600 buildings with 3 or more Gas Point Registration Numbers (GPRNs) in Ireland. Buildings with more than six individual GPRNs are considered the highest priority category. This has been the sole focus of our programme so far, with surveying and refurbishment work anticipated to extend to 2036.
As we complete the survey stage for 6+ GPRN buildings over the next three years, we will begin surveying 5+ GPRN buildings, followed by 4+ GRPN and 3+ GPRN buildings.
Programme of works
Every building is subject to a desktop survey, with approximately 50% of these consequently identified for an in-person site survey. The buildings deemed non-compliant at site survey stage are assigned a risk rating which then informs the schedule of works for the coming year.
While the majority of buildings are found to be compliant, about one-third are identified for upgrade works which can include:
- relocating meters from inside the building (lobby or individual apartments) to an outside wall so that they can be easily accessed by registered gas personnel;
- adding a safety valve to the exterior of the building so that the gas supply can be cut in the event of an emergency, such as a fire; and
- upgrade works that may include both of these solutions, along with additional fire rating works.
Once works are complete, the building is then subject to a rolling programme of review.
This programme is coordinated and managed by Gas Networks Ireland, with support from several delivery partners including Fingleton White and GMC.
Programme update – Q3, 2026
The 6+ GPRN (Gas Point Registration Number) category continues to be the sole focus of the Multiple Occupancy Building upgrade programme. To date, we have completed 8816 desktop surveys and 3966 building surveys. We have so far identified 1,366 buildings for remediation and completed 401 refurbishments from this category.
For the remainder of 2026, we expect to complete a further 450 surveys and remediate a further 89 buildings in the 6+ GPRN category.
