Asset Engineer

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.

Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.

The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role:

Asset Engineering sits under the Chief Technical Engineer who is responsible for providing technical oversight and leadership in key aspects of the design, build, maintain and operate processes for the Gas Network and across emerging technical innovations.

Reporting to the Asset Engineering Manager, the Asset Engineer will support the Asset Engineering Manager in setting out and establishing the relevant European and National technical standards to be adhered to from an engineering perspective, ensuring a high performing, efficient and sustainable network in terms of safety, quality and operability.

The Asset Engineer will contribute to the development and implementation of Design Processes for all assets built out across the network. Working with Design and other areas of the business

Asset Engineering will develop guidance for new design requirements and integrate them into existing process. They will also support the upkeep of engineering information such as standard drawings.

The Asset Engineer will support Asset Engineering in providing technical expertise to the wider business and supporting the development of new technologies and pilot projects including guidance on processes, procedures, standards and specifications. Similarly, Asset Engineering will support pilot activities and programmes being undertaken by GNI in areas such as Hydrogen.

The Asset Engineer will support the Chief Technical Engineer in the assessment of future technologies and opportunities for development of the gas network, currently these include district heating, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and energy storage technologies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Asset Engineering team in managing and updating Design Processes.
  • Driving improvement projects or initiative requirements as an output of technical audits, design validation or regulatory requirements, where gaps in asset related activities require changes to existing or development of new processes. Strive to maintain processes in line with ever developing good practice.
  • Supporting the Technical Audit process, the ISO 55000 audit process and supporting Design Delivery in relation to CRU audits with respect to asset processes, procedures, standards and specifications.
  • Aiding the Asset Engineering function in providing relevant support as part of the regulatory audit process to Process Safety team and Design Delivery, helping them to meet regulatory technical requirements.
  • Contributing to Asset Engineering’s role as an engineering authority across the organisation. Including communicating requirements in meetings, workshops and training sessions.
  • Leading the initiative to develop and coordinate the updating of standard drawings and manuals etc. Working with Asset Delivery and Project Services to achieve the required outputs, which will be a set of standard drawings or manuals to be utilised by the business.
  • Aiding the Asset Engineering function in establishing sustainable solutions through the asset life cycle process that can be incorporated into Asset Delivery and Asset Operations processes. Supports Whole Life Costing / Value Engineering models for Asset Delivery.
  • Engage and work with third parties such as Engineering Service Provides and Technical Specialist as necessary to deliver work scopes.
  • Support the administration, control and maintenance of engineering databases such as the Engineering Requirements Document and Asset Engineering SharePoint Sites.
  • Research of future technologies and communicate learnings to CTE team and wider business.
  • Travel to meetings with suppliers, peer operators and conferences, within Ireland, the UK and Europe may be required from time to time.
  • Perform other such duties that may be required from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant Masters Degree in Engineering (Level 9) or recognised Level 9 engineering equivalent with a minimum of 2 years engineering experience.
  • Enthusiastic self-starter with a proactive approach to problem solving and process development.
  • Good self-learner with ability to review, assess and document large volumes of technical information and present and discuss findings.
  • Knowledge of relevant Gas Standards, Codes of Practice and Statutory Requirements would be desirable.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and to set high standards of performance
