C&I Technician

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.

Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

Role

The Asset Operations function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for the construction, operations and maintenance of the Transmission and Distribution networks and executing all field work both safely and efficiently in line with relevant legislation, standards, industry codes and procedures.

Applications are now invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position of C&I Technician.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participation and performance in the delivery of planned, corrective and reactive C&I operational and capital project activities on the transmission and distribution networks.
  • Performance and monitoring of C&I field activities in line with GNI Health, Safety and Environmental and legislative requirements.
  • Validation and calibration of Fiscal Gas Metering systems throughout the GNI transmission and distribution network to ensure full compliance with fiscal metering standards to maintain high accuracy of gas metering equipment and associated BGN calibration records.
  • Support the development of new technologies (CNG/Biomethane/Hydrogen)
  • The use of Hand Held Technology (HHT) remotely to ensure all aspects of work orders, associated data sheets and specifications are completed accurately, utilizing HHT software features to ensure C&I asset database integrity notifying of any asset discrepancy and reporting HHT issues.
  • Maintenance and problem solving on all C&I assets and installations including but not limited to liaising with vendor’s on issues, diagnosing faults and endeavouring to maintain minimal downtime with faults and alarms, asset data capture requirements and red line updates on drawings.
  • Perform maintenance, operational and high level technical support on all GNI communications networks used by SCADA encompassing configuration, maintenance and set up of routers, switches, structured cabling and modems.
  • Perform ATEX inspection and survey on Electrical and Instrumentation assets to ensure ATEX compliance is achieved and maintained across all installations.
  • Liaising with local authorities and other third parties as required.
  • Identifying risks and issues and utilizing the GNI Hazcon reporting process.
  • Providing flexibility to work across regions as required to address operational needs as they arise
  • Participation on the On-Call Roster as required.
  • Participation in competency assessments and all training requirements.
  • Performing other and emergent duties as may be assigned from time to time

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Holder of National Craft Certificate in appropriate trade.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA and Modbus communications, ATEX, calibration and maintenance of process instrumentation (i.e. pressure and temperature), fiscal metering, heating systems and RTU/PLC systems.
  • Applicants must hold a full driving license.
  • Proven ability to create and develop good working relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals, coupled with the ability to gain commitment and success from others.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Have excellent analytical skills, be able to identify and analyse problems and be able to propose and implement solutions.
  • Ability to set up ongoing procedures to collect and review information as needed to be successful in your role.
  • Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job.
  • Ability to set own high standards of performance and delivering desired results.
