Methane Emissions Engineer

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.

The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role:

The Network Operations team within Asset Operations is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of the Network on a 24-hour basis. The Gas Transportation team within Network Operations is responsible for ensuring the effective measurement and reconciliation of gas being transported on the GNI Network. 

GNI is seeking a Methane Emissions Engineer to ensure compliance with the EU Methane Regulation. Reporting to the Gas Transportation Manager, this role involves developing and implementing strategies to meet the EU Methane Regulation reporting requirements, preparing and submitting annual reports on methane emissions, and engaging with stakeholders to gather and report the required information. The Methane Reporting Engineer will work closely with the programme team charged with ensuring delivery of the Methane Regulation requirements to ensure that monitoring, reporting, and verification obligations are effectively delivered.  This role will have an impact on GNI’s ability to reduce methane emissions and meet its sustainability goals. 

  • Strategy Development:Formulate and implement comprehensive strategies to meet the EU Methane Regulation reporting requirements, ensuring all obligations are met.  This should be data-driven and based on latest industry standards.
  • Best Practice and Benchmarking:  Engage with external working groups and other TSO’s and DSO’s & refer to standards to drive best practice within GNI. 
  • LDAR Program Documentation:Document the progress and implementation of leak detection and repair (LDAR) programs & venting and flaring occurrences.
  • Technical Expertise:Develop and deliver effective GNI-specific quantification methodologies for methane emissions.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather accurate data and ensure comprehensive reporting.  
  • Annual Reporting:Prepare and submit detailed annual reports on methane emissions, including source-level data and mitigation measures.  
  • Verification Coordination:Engage with external verifiers to ensure the timely delivery of annual verification statements. 
  • Project Participation:Attend relevant project meetings and contribute to the successful delivery of the Methane Regulation requirements.
  • Develop Reporting Pathway:  Develop a communication framework for annual and periodic communication with the competent authority.
  • Continuous Improvement:Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to enhance operational efficiency and compliance 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in environmental compliance, particularly with EU regulations.
  • Strong understanding of methane emissions and their impact on climate change.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work as part of the Gas Transportation team and implement continual improvement where and when required.
  • Strong report writing and document preparation skills.
  • Ability to create and develop good working relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals.
  • Ability to set up ongoing procedures to collect and review information as needed to be successful in your role.
  • Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job.
  • Ability to set own high standards of performance and deliver desired results.
