The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation.
Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

Gas Networks Ireland is now seeking to appoint a Programme Lead to work within the Assets & Infrastructure, Asset Delivery team.
The Role:
The Asset Delivery function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for the end to end planning, designing and delivery of GNI’s portfolio of asset development programmes. The Asset Delivery function brings together all the technical and project support capabilities needed to take high-level projects and programmes from the Portfolio Office and translate these through from detailed design and project planning, to construction delivery and handover to Asset Operations.
Reporting to the Project Delivery Manager (Renewable Energy), the Programme Lead will actively manage key Business Programmes and provide Governance and Oversight across the programmes. This role involves close collaboration with Senior stakeholders across the GNI business as well as with other teams and in particular with the Asset Delivery, Asset Management, HSQ and Portfolio Office teams.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Programme Lead will be responsible for the active management and delivery of multi-year and multi-disciplinary programmes within the Assets & Infrastructure Portfolio. Key responsibilities include:
Developing and managing comprehensive programme plans, including timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
Efficiently allocating and managing resources across programmes, proactively addressing and resolving issues as they arise, and effectively managing changes to programme scope, schedule, and costs to ensure seamless execution and delivery.
Ensuring robust financial and budget management for the programmes under direct supervision, while also maintaining oversight and governance of budgets across all programmes to ensure financial alignment with GNI practices.
Identifying, assessing, and managing risks across all programmes, ensuring proper mitigation strategies are in place to address potential challenges.
Engaging with senior stakeholders to understand their needs and expectations, ensuring alignment with programme objectives.
Converting business requirements and needs into structured and flexible programmes that can be delivered efficiently and effectively.
Engaging proactively with key GNI business stakeholders in relation to programme delivery and ensuring the development of strong and effective working relationships with key stakeholders at a senior level across the GNI organisation.
Driving for high performance, setting the standards for continuous improvement in the delivery of relevant programmes, and overseeing the Programme Management methodology.
Collaborating effectively with the Asset Delivery, Asset Management, HSQ and Portfolio Office teams to collectively contribute to the development of the programmes.
Ensuring effective governance and controls are in place across all programmes and that appropriate Quality Assurance standards are maintained and enforced.
Working collaboratively and effectively with senior stakeholders across the business to provide a comprehensive, cohesive, flexible, and high-quality level of programme delivery to the GNI Business.
Performing other duties as required from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Relevant third level degree or equivalent with at least 10-15 years of experience in delivering complex projects, and a minimum of 3 - 5 years as a Programme lead.
Professional certifications such as Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), or Program Management Professional (PgMP) are highly desirable.
Proven track record of successfully managing large-scale business-centric programmes.
Experience in financial management, budgeting, and cost control.
Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and manage relationships at all levels.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with senior stakeholders.
Proven ability to lead and motivate multi-disciplinary and multi-functional programme teams.
Commitment to identifying and implementing process improvements and best practices in programme delivery.
Proven ability to influence, negotiate, and develop strong working relationships with key senior stakeholders across business areas.
Demonstrated experience in effective risk and issue management, and integrated planning across programmes.
Detail-oriented, highly organized, and possessing strong problem-solving skills.
Experience in change management and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities and demands.
Demonstrated experience in managing vendor relationships and third-party suppliers.
