Gas Networks Ireland pilots innovative pipeline technology to support a hydrogen-ready future

Gas Networks Ireland, the operator of Ireland’s national gas network, is piloting new advanced pipeline technology that could help lower emissions, improve efficiencies and help ensure Ireland’s gas network is ready for hydrogen.

The new technology – a patented composite pipeline which has been developed by international partner Purapipe International – will be evaluated under real world conditions.

Off grid testing will begin at Gas Networks Ireland’s state-of-the-art Network Innovation Centre by its service delivery partner Murphy International. This controlled environment will allow the technology to be rigorously tested for pipeline safety, integrity and performance before any potential wider use.

Gas Networks Ireland is exploring the potential for this technology to reduce the carbon footprint of pipeline infrastructure, and to operate more efficiently than conventional materials. The pilot will also help assess how it could support Ireland’s transition to renewable gases and a hydrogen-ready network in line with Government policy.

The project will be delivered in phases and initial operational results of the pilot are expected in late 2026.

Gas Networks Ireland’s Chief Operations Officer, Bobby Gleeson said:

“Gas Networks Ireland has a strong track record of innovation in how we develop and manage the national gas network. By working with international partners like Purapipe, we can explore new technologies that could potentially enhance the resilience of our network, reduce emissions and ensure that Ireland is ready to safely transport renewable gases such as hydrogen. This pilot is another example of how we are future-proofing the national gas network in support of Ireland’s energy transition goals.”

CEO of Purapipe International, Jesper Steen said:

“We are delighted to partner with Gas Networks Ireland on this important pilot. This project showcases the potential of our technology to deliver more efficient and environmentally friendly infrastructures.”

This initiative is part of Gas Networks Ireland wider innovation programme, which is focused on ensuring Ireland’s gas network can support the national transition to a low-carbon economy, while maintaining energy security. From biomethane connections to hydrogen blending trials, Gas Networks Ireland continues to test and invest in technologies that will ensure the gas network remains safe, resilient and the backbone of Ireland’s energy mix for decades to come.
