Killenard students win national carbon monoxide safety competition

Two former sixth class students from Scoil Naomh Eoin, Killenard have won a nationwide poster competition to raise awareness of carbon monoxide and the dangers that it can pose in our homes.

Gas Networks Ireland, in partnership with Junior Achievement Ireland (JAI), called for entries to a carbon monoxide safety poster competition from students who had recently completed the ‘Energize’ programme. The Energize programme delivers science to primary school students around Ireland through practical and engaging lessons to foster interest in the subject so students continue with it to second level education. Carbon monoxide awareness is an important element of the programme.

Commenting as she presented Scoil Naomh Eoin with an iPad, Gas Networks Ireland’s Social Sustainability Manager Grainne O’Reilly: "After taking part in the ‘Energize’ STEM education programme, students had the chance to channel their creativity into a poster competition, all while raising awareness about the importance of carbon monoxide safety at home. There were standout entries from every corner of Ireland, but it was Andrew and Mateo’s creation that truly shone!”.

Boyana Boeva, Junior Achievement Ireland’s Programme Coordinator said: “We are pleased to be able to bring programmes like ‘Energize’ to schools nationwide with Gas Networks Ireland. Energize explores the world of science, energy and safety in a fun and exciting way!”

In 2024, Gas Networks Ireland was appointed as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Champion by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communication (DECC).
