Gas Networks Ireland welcomes CRU publication on reverse compression to stimulate Irish biomethane industry in rural areas
Gas Networks Ireland has welcomed the publication of the Commission for Regulation of Utilities’ (CRU) information note confirming an interim regulatory solution for reverse compression, a key enabler for the growth of Ireland’s biomethane sector.
Reverse compression allows renewable gas produced at local injection points to be transported efficiently across the national gas network, supporting increased biomethane integration and helping to stimulate Ireland’s biomethane industry in rural areas.
Gas Networks Ireland has developed an interim solution to facilitate continued investment in reverse compression infrastructure while the enduring regulatory framework and supporting policy are being developed. The CRU has reviewed the approach and considers it a practical and pragmatic measure that enables progress in the short term.
Gas Networks Ireland estimates that the interim solution may facilitate the injection of an additional 437 GWh of biomethane into the national gas grid, equating to approximately 7.5 % of the National Biomethane Strategy domestic production target of 5.7 TWh by 2030.
Gas Networks Ireland’s Head of Business Development Karen Doyle said:
“Reverse compression is a critical enabler for Ireland’s biomethane industry. It allows renewable biomethane gas produced in rural areas to flow efficiently through the national gas network, unlocking new supply, supporting farm diversification and strengthening regional economies. The interim solution provides essential certainty for investors and developers, ensuring momentum is maintained while the enduring regulatory framework is finalised.”
The CRU information note1 confirms that the interim solution is now active. Details of the process and eligibility criteria are outlined in the Reverse Grid Compression Connection Process document2 available on the Gas Networks Ireland website. Parties interested in availing of the interim solution are encouraged to contact Gas Networks Ireland through the reverse grid compression form3.
