Project Crag

Project overview

Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for building, managing and maintaining an extensive network of gas infrastructure across the Republic of Ireland, including the provision of new connections.

In 2025, we completed a contracted project  to connect a new customer to the national gas network at a site in Clondalkin, Co. Dublin. This involved the installation of a new 1.6km transmission pipeline and the construction of an Above Ground Installation (AGI), where the customer pipeline was connected

The site is now fully operational with gas now flowing safely to the customer.

Project highlights

There were several unique engineering aspects to this work which was delivered to meet the customer’s requirements:

  • Laying high-pressure steel pipeline through constrained urban corridors, areas of dense buried utilities, and locations adjacent to residential properties and schools, which required extensive utility surveys, careful access planning and tailored working hours (including night works) to minimise public impact.
  • A ‘trenchless crossing’ of Dublin’s Grand Canal – via a micro-tunnel with 11m deep shafts, bringing pipeline 5m below and 77m across the riverbed. This option was chosen based on several factors, such as mitigating environmental impacts, minimising disruption in a heavily built-up area, and the overall feasibility of construction.
  • A ‘hot-tap’ connection undertaken by highly specialised teams, meaning the new customer pipeline was connected to the existing live gas pipeline without disrupting supply in the area.
  • Commissioning of the AGI with the associated equipment vendors to ensure the gas was available to flow once the customer was ready.

Managed and supervised by Gas Networks Ireland, Fingleton White were the lead designers on this project, with Murphy completing the construction works and National Gas and Terra Solutions engaged as specialist subcontractors for the hot-tap and tunnelling works, respectively.
