The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation.
Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role
The Health, Safety and Quality (HSQ) function in Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for safety policy, quality assurance and Health and Safety compliance across all areas of the business.
Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Assets and Infrastructure Safety Lead is responsible for the management of health and safety strategies, policies, and procedures across the Assets and Infrastructure pillar. Managing a team of Safety Systems Engineers, they will provide strategic assurance that statutory health and safety requirements are met, while coordinating support mechanisms across the lifecycle of Assets and Infrastructure projects and programmes with a risk-based approach, ensuring alignment with legal and industry standards while promoting continuous improvement and safety excellence.
The Assets and Infrastructure Safety Lead will support the Portfolio, Asset Management, Strategic Network Planning, and Asset Delivery functions in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man and is tasked with overseeing safety governance, compliance, and performance to support Gas Networks Ireland’s strategic goals and legal requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the development and implementation of a risk-based health and safety strategy for Assets and Infrastructure across Portfolio, Asset Management, Strategic Network Planning, and Asset Delivery.
Ensure health and safety oversight of Assets and Infrastructure projects and programmes providing adequate safety leadership, support and assurance in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man.
Monitor health and safety performance in Assets and Infrastructure against KPIs to provide assurance that safety management arrangements are effective at minimising risk, fulfilling statutory requirements and delivering the performance expectations of Gas Networks Ireland.
Oversee calculation and implementation of safety performance related financial adjustments where required.
Lead a risk-based safety inspection schedule for Assets and Infrastructure projects and programmes.
Ensure proactive interface with internal and external stakeholders to safeguard compliance with relevant health and safety obligations.
Lead health and safety element of the procurement process for Assets and Infrastructure.
Coordinate Health and Safety attendance at project meetings, HAZIDs, HAZCONs, etc, as required.
Ensure the statutory reporting of accidents, incidents and ill health in accordance with current legislation and company procedures.
Lead the governance of GNI’s ISO 45001 certification on capital projects and programmes and ensure it functions alongside other certifications as part of an integrated management system.
Manage a team of Safety Systems Engineers.
Assist in the review, creation or further development and implementation of Gas Networks Ireland health and safety strategy, policy and procedures, incorporating legislative requirements and industry best practice.
Represent Gas Networks Ireland at European and international councils Eg. Marcogaz.
Uphold the values and beliefs of the Work Safe Home Safe programme and encourage others to do likewise.
Perform other duties as required from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Relevant third level qualification or equivalent experience.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a professional role, ideally in utility, engineering, construction or major accident hazard industry.
Proficient in the management of multi-disciplinary teams ensuring compliance with statutory safety obligations.
Strong people management skills with a proven ability to achieve and maintain strong relationships.
Proven ability to manage, motivate and influence teams with a proactive approach to identifying and solving issues.
Excellent communicator proficient in creating and maintaining good working relationships with stakeholders and others, resulting in the realisation of organisational goals and objectives.
Competent in the making and taking of risk-based decisions based on strong technical or practical understanding.
Demonstrated commitment to developing new skills in self and team members while promoting the acceleration of results through others.
Proven track record in dealing with complex issues, proactively and in a timely fashion, along with the ability to communicate complex information to others.
Demonstrated ability to identify and promote opportunities where change will generate continuous safety improvement.
