Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.

Almost 725,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.

The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role:

The IT team within Gas Networks Ireland is an integral part of the business providing operational, and customer-focused IT services. These services include solution delivery, service management, and infrastructure & operations management. These services are provided through a combination of in-house resources and external service providers. 

 

 Reporting to the IT Service Manager, working within a small team the CMDB Lead is responsible for the management of the Configuration Management Database (CMDB)platform, including frontline and back-end engagements with the IT and OT teams.  The role requires holistic approach in relation to services, incidents, problems and changes, striving to improve asset and process related queries and issues in an efficient and professional manner. This role requires collaboration and sharing of service management responsibilities as required. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, implementation and improvements of the CMDB structure and processes supporting IT and OT. 

  • Asset Management in adherence to NIS2 directives. Compliance assurance. 

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively across multiple stakeholders to ensure an effective CMDB that agrees with governance standards. 

  • Develop and maintain CMDB growth and improvements plans (including processes, tools, resource allocation and planning). 

  • Lead the CMDB Technical Team to manage online assets estates. 

  • Support wider IT Service Management team with Asset Management and Service level KPI’s   

  • Manage engagements with outsourced CMDB developers to deliver company’s KPIs. 

  • Ensuring CMDB Management stability and continuity, providing input to risk and security management plans. 

  • Project manage CMDB upgrades on annual basis  

  • Control of the CMDB estates, ensuring that all IT & OT software licenses are managed and reviewed on a consistent basis. 

  • Oversee testing and validation of the CMDB functionality and performance. 

  • Management of CMDB operations and updates, ensuring the availability, reliability, and usability of the platform and its data. 

  • Monitoring and auditing the CMDB activities and transactions. 

  • Evaluation and improvement of the CMDB performance and maturity, measuring and reporting on the efficiencies and efficiency of the CMDB and its data in supporting the IT Service Delivery management. 

  • Understanding business applications and their functionality in the ITIL model. 

  • Performing daily tasks, which are based primarily on the frequency of CI updates:

     

  • Work with Discovery administrator on resolving any data issues associated with Discovery population​.

  • Review new CIs for quality​.

  • Work with other owners of data sources that populate the CMDB. 

  • Review Major Incidents to determine if Configuration Items were recorded and leveraged correctly, communicating results to operational teams​. 

     

  • Participation in CAB meetings, ensuring CMDB data is part of all CHGs and is driving positive Change Management experience. 

  • Review, assess, monitor and improve overall CMDB Health. 

  • Assist business to understand how data is gathered and consumed to continue to its positive impact on processes and services.​ 

  • Review service offerings and configuration items relationships. Ensure support group owners, applications, business services owners and all other table details are fully populated. 

  • Identify improvements with consumers of data whose processes interact with the CMDB​ (Change owners​, Program/Process/Service managers​, Incident managers, Help desk, etc) 

  • Act as a voice of the CMDB, that can help a business understand how data is gathered and consumed to continue to its positive impact on processes and services. 

  • Perform other duties as required from time to time. 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Relevant Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, business administration or other related field (or equivalent work experience). 

  • CMDBF & CSDM certifications desirable, preferably for ITOM such as Service Now. 

  • Comprehension of and the ability to communicate and delegate implementation of various ITIL CMDB, CSDM models. 

  • Broad general knowledge of IT infrastructure topology including typical application, server, and networking configurations. 

  • 5 years+ IT work experience and 5+ years in a leading management role (delivery, design, improvement, resource and people management). 

  • Experience in a role in an environment similar in size and complexity to GNI. 

  • Ability to communicate, advocate and coordinate implementation of the enhanced business processes involving CMDB models. 

  • Demonstrable and recent experience in asset operations/ CMDB management role.
