Field Operations Technician

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,758km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in Europe. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs.   

The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation.   

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

Applications are now invited from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Field Operations Technician. 

The Role

The Network Operations team is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the transmission and distribution networks in line with relevant legislation, standards, industry codes and procedures

Reporting to the Networks Coordinator, or their delegate, the Field Operations Technician is responsible for completing commissioning, operational, maintenance and decommissioning activities on the transmission and distribution networks in a safe and efficient manner.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completion of preventive, corrective and reactive maintenance  activities on the transmission and distribution networks in line with relevant legislation, standards, industry codes and procedures.

  • Support delivery of the GNI capital investment program by supporting the construction and commissioning of new installations and assets as required. 

  • Operation and Maintenance of asset classes including but not limited to CNG, Biomethane, and Hydrogen

  • The use of Hand Held Technology (HHT) remotely to ensure all aspects of work orders, associated data sheets and specifications are completed accurately, utilizing HHT software features to ensure EC&I asset database integrity notifying of any asset discrepancy and reporting HHT issues

     

  • To identify all operational issues/concerns that relate to the operation of the network to their line manager in a timely manner through the appropriate channels.

  • Full participation in a team drawn from both direct and contract staff to include cross skilling with other functions where required.

  • Maintenance and problem solving on all assets and installations including but not limited to liaising with vendor’s on issues, diagnosing faults and endeavouring to maintain minimal downtime with faults and alarms. 

  • Identifying areas for improvement with processes, equipment and installations on the network.

  • Liaising with local authorities and other third parties as required

  • Compliance with all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements including the completion of Site Risk Assessments/Safe Systems of Work, Hazard Reporting etc. and participation in all new Safety/Environmental initiatives as required. 

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with documented GNI procedures, risk assessments and work instructions and where unsure to seek confirmation from their line manager.

  • Inter-regional work flexibility where required.

  • Mentoring and supporting apprentices.

  • Participation in competency assessments and all training requirements.

  • Participation in an out of hours on-call rota as required.

  • Other duties that may be assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Applicants must be a time served craftsperson (Mechanical) with a basic trade cert / apprenticeship or have obtained junior / senior trade cert.

  • Experience working with natural gas is desirable however not essential.

  • Proven experience in plant and system maintenance such as Compressors, Pumps, Industrial Boilers, Hydraulic & Pneumatic systems and Process pipework.

  • Applicants must hold a full clean driving license

  • Proven ability to create and develop good working relationships to facilitate the accomplishment of work goals, coupled with the ability to gain commitment and success from others

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Have excellent analytical skills, be able to identify and analyse problems and be able to propose and implement solutions

  • Ability to set up ongoing procedures to collect and review information as needed to be successful in your role

  • Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job
