The Role
The Asset Delivery function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for the end to end planning, designing and delivery of GNI’s portfolio of asset development programmes. The Asset Delivery function brings together all the technical and project support resources needed to take high-level projects and programmes from the Portfolio Office and translate these through from detailed design and project planning, to construction delivery and handover to Asset Operations.
Reporting to the Design Delivery Lead – Compressors and Renewable Gas (Tx/Dx), the Senior Design Engineer – Mechanical Renewable Gas will have responsibility for the detailed design of biomethane connections across the network in addition to other regulated or unregulated connections such as Hydrogen pending volumes of biomethane connections. The Senior Design Engineer – Mechanical Renewable Gas will manage the design of the new connections and outsourced engineering providers ensuring a high-quality design service is delivered to the Business. The successful candidate will have the ability to lead a team, to effectively diagnose technical issues and have knowledge of gas related process design. The Senior Design Engineer - Mechanical Renewable Gas will work closely with other Senior Design Engineers, for example EC&I, to ensure alignment of the biomethane design process to ensure the end to end design process is aligned to meet the overall project delivery timelines.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Lead a team comprised of internal design engineers, seconded engineers and engineering service providers to deliver the design of biomethane connections to the gas network to meet connection programme timelines.
• Managing the design in accordance with the Engineering Design Manual, including design review, design deviation process, material specification, tender document preparation for biomethane connections, comprising pipelines, network modifications and pressure reducing installations across the network.
• Provide justification and technical detail to support safety case submissions, QRA, field technical questions from Regulatory Authorities.
• Drive efficiency within the design process and support the development of technical data and manuals.
• Ensure all design documentation is fully and accurately completed and develop appropriate procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory controls, where required.
• Contributing to the continuous improvement of internal operational processes and procedures including ISO 9001 in the Design environment.
• Drive sustainability within the design process for biomethane connections.
• Co-ordination of specialist technical services and third-party resources as part of the design process.
• Support the development of specifications for biomethane, hydrogen etc. across the gas network.
• Contributing to the ongoing competency initiative within Design Delivery and develop technical expertise to become a Technical Authority.
• Performing other duties as assigned from time to time.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
• Degree in Engineering (Level 8) with a minimum of five years engineering experience, preferably in the natural gas industry.
• Technical proficiency in process design and pressure equipment specification.
• Ability to manage micro technical detail, convey, and interface with peers or external authorities at a technical level being resilient in technical detail.
• Excellent interpersonal and strong leadership skills and the ability to influence, advocate and persuade.
• Have a strong knowledge of QRA process and risk management systems e.g. Design Risk Assessment, HAZOP, Functional Safety, Safety Case etc.
• Have a working knowledge of relevant Gas Standards, Codes of Practice and Statutory Requirements.
• Facilitate the implementation and acceptance of change within the workplace.
• Provide coaching in the development of technical skills and abilities in others.
• Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job.
• Driver of high standards for individual, team and organisational accomplishment and delivering desired results.
• Proven track record with dealing with complex issues, proactively and in a timely fashion, along with the ability to communicate complex information to others.
• Ability to set own high standards of performance and delivering desired results.
