Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world.

The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and over 40% of the country’s electricity generation.
Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role:
Reporting to the Technical Manager – Hydrogen Programme, the Senior Hydrogen Engineer is responsible for supporting the demonstration of network readiness and the delivery of demonstration projects related to the hydrogen programme for Gas Networks Ireland. The position involves collaboration with other business units and external stakeholders to ensure all technical and safety considerations associated with hydrogen demonstration projects, both on and off the network, are identified, addressed, and delivered systematically.
The Senior Hydrogen Engineer will lead the hydrogen innovation research programme by managing projects, developing solutions, building business cases, collaborating with external partners and policymakers to advance hydrogen safety and provide supporting evidence. The jobholder will work closely with the Innovation Delivery Team to ensure a coordinated and effective use of resources through the Brownsbarn Network Innovation Centre. Due to this close working relationship with the Innovation Delivery Team and the Brownsbarn Network Innovation Centre, it is expected that the jobholder may need to work out of the Brownsbarn campus as required to facilitate aspects of project delivery.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Project Management & Delivery:
Manage and deliver hydrogen demonstration and research projects, ensuring safety throughout the project is priority and working closely with the GNI Health and Safety teams to ensure all safety related matters are comprehensively assessed.
Implement the Hydrogen innovation programme, contributing to the development of innovative solutions, research and business cases
Ensure all technical and safety aspects related to the injection, transportation, and storage of hydrogen on the network or demonstration projects are considered and comprehensively addressed
Develop technical documentation and reports to support project delivery and safety case submissions including developing a robust documentation management system for hydrogen
Stakeholder Management:
Collaborate with relevant external bodies, organisations, and policymakers to advance the hydrogen programme and develop necessary evidence for the hydrogen safety case
Build relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders to help deliver hydrogen projects, representing GNI on external groups, projects and initiatives as needed
Other Duties:
Stay updated on emerging industry best practices, gas standards, codes of practice, and statutory requirements relevant to hydrogen projects
Make active contribution and actively collaborate with the Hydrogen Programme team and its strategic objectiveS
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Degree in Engineering (Level 8) with a minimum of five (5) years engineering experience, preferably in the natural gas, hydrogen or similar industry
Have a working knowledge of H&S standards and risk management systems e.g. Design risk assessment, HAZID/ HAZOP/ HAZCON, LOPA, QRA, ALARP principles, FMEA
Technical proficiency in process design and pressure equipment specification
Strong analytical and commercial acumen with high level of computer literacy
Strong subject matter knowledge of hydrogen including the emerging industry best practice is an advantage
Knowledge of relevant Gas Standards, Codes of Practice and Statutory Requirements would be an advantage
Enthusiastic self-starter with a proactive approach to problem solving and process development
Experience with identifying improvement opportunities, generating ideas and implementing solutions
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills and the ability to influence, advocate and persuade
Strong stakeholder management experience at all levels to succeed in achieving mutually beneficial objectives
Ability to set high standards, by encouraging others to assume responsibility and accountability for tasks
Ability to set up ongoing procedures to collect and review information as needed
Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job
Provide coaching in the development of technical skills and abilities in others
Proven track record with dealing with complex issues, problem solving, in a timely fashion, along with the ability to communicate complex information to others
