Safety Systems Engineer

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €3bn, 14,758km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in Europe 

Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. 

The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. 

Gas Networks Ireland is aiming to deliver a repurposed, resized and fully decarbonised gas network by 2045. Its “Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network” envisions transforming the existing gas network into two separate systems carrying 100% renewable gas, one dedicated to biomethane and the other to green hydrogen, with the potential to carry approximately 30% biomethane and 70% green hydrogen, as well as offering significant long term energy export opportunities.

The Role

The Health and Safety team within Gas Networks Ireland provides safety support, advice, measurement and assurance to the business covering a diverse range of gas and non-gas related activities, including capital and operational projects and programmes. 

Reporting to the Assets and Infrastructure Safety Lead, the Safety Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting the Health and Safety components of the Integrated Management System (IMS) and monitoring compliance by Gas Networks Ireland and its contractors with both organisational and legal standards. Working collaboratively with other members of the Safety Team, the successful candidate will serve as the principal contact for daily support and the provision of Health and Safety information and advice to Assets and Infrastructure, Gas Networks Ireland and associated internal and external stakeholders. A proactive approach to Health and Safety is essential, with an emphasis on encouraging and coaching personnel throughout the organisation in promoting a positive safety culture. The role includes oversight of the regions of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man, and will require periodic travel.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support Gas Networks Ireland in the creation, development, implementation and communication of health and safety strategy, policy and procedures, incorporating legislative requirements, industry best practice and other matters relating to the GNI Integrated Management System. 

  • Provide health and safety support to Assets and Infrastructure projects and programmes and monitor and report on overall compliance to Health and Safety standards. This includes A&I projects and programmes, Bio-Gas, Hydrogen and CNG, etc, as required.

  • Support Assets and Infrastructure in the safe delivery of projects and interface with contractor Health and Safety teams to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.

  • Contribute to the annual risk-based network health and safety audit and inspection programme.

  • Ensure that statutory reporting of accidents, incidents and ill health is undertaken in accordance with current legislation and GNI procedures in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Isle of Man.

  • Support the delivery of the GNI risk assessment programme on an annual basis. Ensure all risks are identified, eliminated, controlled, communicated and escalated where necessary.

  • Support the Integrated Management System audit programme.

  • Support Health and Safety requirements of GNI procurement processes.

  • Support the implementation of contractual financial adjustments where required.

  • Escalate risks and issues to the Assets and Infrastructure Safety Lead as required.

  • Uphold the values and beliefs of the Work Safe Home Safe programme and encourage others to do likewise.

  • Work with other GNI departments and stakeholders as required.

  • Support occupational and other health and safety initiatives as a member of the safety team.

  • Perform other duties as required from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Relevant third level qualification or equivalent experience required.

  • A minimum of three years post-graduate experience in a professional engineering, utility or safety environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant safety legislation and ability to interpret and translate such information into business policy and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of management systems, aspects and controls.

  • A persuasive influencer and negotiator.

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully influence key internal and external stakeholders and identify issues that will impact business performance.

  • Proven ability to act as an advocate for the development and implementation of change.

  • Proven ability to work proactively both independently and as a member of a team.
